Junior
During their first three years in the Junior school, children
are grouped in a flexible system which allows them to progress
at individual rates. Their progress from Year 4 to Year 6 is
determined by their age and their rate of progress through
earlier classes.
Currently the Junior School operate five classrooms - New
Entrants to Year six.
The reading and language programme is structured around the
children’s experiences and needs. The school has a specialist
reading teacher providing additional and individual teaching.
This teacher works closely with all teachers advising on
programmes and progress.
In mathematics children follow the Numeracy Project spending
up
to 80% of the year on Number and 20% on other strands like Measurement, Geometry and Statistics.
Algebra is now part of the Numeracy number strand. Emphasis is on doing
the basics well through the use of technology and hands on
materials.
Science activities help children develop useful ways to explore
and make sense of their world. Health programmes are augmented
by regular visits from service agencies, eg health nurse,
police, traffic safety officer. Social Studies programmes make
the most of the local environment and resources.
Children at all levels of the Primary School also have
opportunities to develop interests and skills in sports and
fitness, art, music, technology, integrated Maori and drama,
where there is considerable interaction with the secondary
school in the facilities provided.
Regular visits from associated professionals occur and parents
are welcome to access these.
All class teachers are readily approachable and encourage
contact with parents. We encourage a happy family atmosphere and
enjoy regular contact with our pupils’ parents.
New Entrant parent talks are held each year, to introduce
parents to the curriculum and discuss their expectations and
needs and those of the teacher.
