Activities at Amuri



As in any school, we offer as wide a range of activities and opportunities as we can, dependent on staff strengths and offers from individuals and groups outside the immediate school community.

Sporting activities are valued by the school community and the following programmes have run in recent years and are expected to continue in the future:
 

  • A regular Wednesday sport period for all students in Years 5 – 13 all year round with inter-whanau competitions run in a variety of sports.
  • School swimming and athletic sports.
  • Participation in the Canterbury Country High Schools events for swimming, tennis, athletics, indoor sports and winter sports.
  • Participation in the Canterbury Secondary Schools athletics and South Island athletics.
  • Volleyball for Years 9 – 13 with three teams playing in the Christchurch competition in Terms 1 and 4.
  • Participation in the Hurunui sports programme for Year 5 – 8 students in swimming, cross country, seven a side rugby, athletics, softball, triathlon, tennis and tee ball.
  • A Milo Cup cricket team playing in the competition in term 1 and a team in the Milo Shield in term 4.
  • A Year 9 & 10 netball team playing in the Southern Skies tournament in Brisbane in the July holidays.
  • Students participating in the New Zealand Area Schools sports tournament as part of a ‘Top of the South’ team.
  • School badminton, squash and tennis championships.
  • Sports exchanges in summer and winter with Hurunui College
  • Rippa rugby visits and games.
  • Kiwi golf for Year 5 & 6 students.
  • Year 9/10 teams played in the Christchurch Wednesday Sports in cricket and netball.

 

Cultural activities are growing and are also highly valued by a supportive local community. Again, in recent years the following activities have been offered:

  • Casafest – a mixture of sporting and cultural competitions involving 40 students from each of the Canterbury Area Schools at one venue for three days.
  • A major school production, the musical ‘No Ill Feeling’ involving students from Years 5 – 13 and many staff.
  • School speech competitions at Year 7 – 13.
  • Drama club at lunchtimes.
  • A junior choir and a senior choir.
  • Kapa haka.
  • A school orchestra.
  • Chess championships.
  • Visits from Japanese schools Setagaya High School and Myojo Gakuen.

A feature of the school has been the development of a ‘Lunchtime activities’ programme run on Fridays with opportunities for all students. This programme is supported by the Whanau Leaders who  have a major role in its operation. The following activities are offered:

  • Quiz’s
  • Bad Hair day
  • Make a model
