Academy
The Hurunui Academy offers NZQA accredited courses working towards
NCEA or other National Certificates. Skilled teaching staff,
small classes and 'on the job' work-place-training are a feature
of academy options. The academy provides excellent opportunities
for employment or acts as a pathway to ITO (Industry Training
Organisation) tertiary studies, as
it gives students an opportunity to study a range of skills in
vocational based training.
All Academy courses offer full timetabled teaching periods per
week with additional time allowed for extended practical
instruction. Students can combine academy courses with other
academic subjects to complement their course.
Entry is open to senior students and adults and all participants
need to show a genuine interest in the area of the course
selected and must be prepared for some commitment of time
outside normal school hours.
Currently, the following courses are offered through the
academy:
Rural studies - for students with a genuine desire to
gain both theoretical and practical farming skills with a view
to employment and/or continuing training. Practical experience
and assessment days are covered by 10 full days on local farms.
Hospitality 1 & 2. This course is delivered both at
school and the commercial environment e.g.
The Heritage, Hanmer Springs. The course covers practical and
theoretical study in the different domains involved in
hospitality e.g. accommodation, food, beverage, housekeeping.
Outdoor education - Weekly excursions are a feature of this
course to practice the skills of kayaking, rock-climbing,
mountain biking and tramping. Students need to be self-motivated
and physically fit. An ideal opportunity to develop personal and
leadership skills over a wide range of outdoor activities.
Carpentry - runs as a two year course using elementary
construction skills from the building and furniture ITOs.
Students will also work on a construction project in the local
community as well as individual projects at school.
